Rafael Zabaleta
A surprise discovery during this research journey was learning more about Rafael Zabaleta, a Spanish painter and contemporary of Dalí. Although his name seems less known outside of Spain, his style of primitive expressionism reminds me of Van Gogh and Gauguin. The only self-portrait I found was painted later in his life, in 1956, four years before his death. The painting uses an orange-yellow base colour and combines primitive and cubist techniques to depict the lady and landscape in the background.
