Joan Miró and Surrealism
Miró, another great artist and contemporary of Picasso (1893-1983, 90 years old; Picasso, 1881-1973, 91 years old), took a completely different path. Known for his flattened imagery and symbolic figures, Miró’s style is edgy, dynamic, and, to some extent, rhythmic, reminding me of Kandinsky. What I find interesting is how he uses lines in his self-portraits, giving them a sharpness with a sense of sarcasm. Moreover, he played with two of his self-portraits, and by comparing them, I sensed his self-deprecating humour.
